Chinese multinational electronics company, Xiaomi Corp (HKG: 1810) has unveiled its concept smart glasses product dubbed the Xiaomi Smart Glasses. The Xiaomi smart glasses mark the company’s shift into the world of Augmented Reality (AR), and while the company’s spokesman affirmed there is no plan to commercialize the product yet, the description of the product as shared signifies the possibility of mass-producing the product in the near future.
The Xiaomi Smart Glasses utilizes a monochrome MicroLED system drawing on its “higher pixel density and longer lifespan while having a simpler structure” in comparison to OLED display features. The advances in the MicroLED display “allows for a more compact display, as well as easier screen integration.”
The Xiaomi product brandishes a self-emissive technology that is considered as the future of display systems in relation to what OLED offers today. Per specifications, the smart glass is “roughly the size of a grain of rice” at 2.4mm x 2.02mm and has a peak brightness of 2 million nits. The bright lights are billed to be shielded from entering the wearer’s eyes through a mechanism that will suppress the brightness.

The product has an unspecified quad-core Arm processor, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules, a battery, and a five-megapixel camera on board.
The Age of Smart Glasses: Xiaomi Tagging Along
As the development of AR technology advances, many technology companies are beginning to explore how the technology could be developed into everyday products, and this is fueling the dive into smart glasses.
As reported by The Verge, the first pair of smart glasses produced by Facebook Inc (NASDAQ: FB), and Ray-Ban went on sale last week for $299. The feat marked a new era of advanced technology backed by the device’s ability to take pictures, and record videos hands-free. Just as it is with many technologies, steady development is expected from this point onward, this graduation is seen in the concept of smart glasses introduced by the Chinese company.
Besides Facebook and Xiaomi, there are a number of multinational tech firms with hands-on development of AR-based products. According to a Motley Fool report, Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL) has highlighted that it has over 1 billion AR devices in the world, and the company has slowly but surely been building a foundation in AR for years.
