TON OS that is expected to launch in the nearest future will not serve as an alternative to the existing operating systems. Instead, it will be an add-in for devices to support apps based on blockchain.

Pavel Durov‘s Telegram Open Network (TON) will shortly have its own operating system, named TON OS.

According to the TON Labs website, TON OS is an end-to-end open-source infrastructure designed to enable developers and users to work with TON blockchain. The apps for installing TON OS are ready, soon they will be available on Google Play and AppStore.

Notably, TON OS will not serve as an alternative to the existing operating systems. Instead, it will be an add-in for devices to support apps based on blockchain. TON OS has been available for blockchain developers earlier. But now it has got a user’s experience, which means it will be in mainstream use.

Does TON Really Need Its Own Operating System?

A person familiar with the matter told RBC:

“Nobody bought the first PCs, because there were two programs on them at the best. In the blockchain, we are at about the time when the first programs for computers appeared, even before the era of DOS operating systems.”

He further added that using blockchain for crypto payments only is irrational:

“It’s like putting your photos on a computer, opening them on the screen, and using the PC as an electronic photo frame. From the point of view of functionality, we are now using the blockchain in about the same way.”

Within TON OS, it will be possible to create apps automatically compatible with the blockchain platform. In addition, the spokesperson believes there will be plenty of applications in the operating system that will ensure the secure transfer of cryptos as well as other values. He said:

“In the field of finance or, for example, any voting, decentralized management can solve a huge number of issues with corruption, management efficiency, citizen involvement. Small businesses will be able to reduce costs by using secure chat for participants managing the assets of this business and contractual arrangements of the parties.”

According to Russian Internet Ombudsman Dmitry Marinichev, TON OS operating system will enable the launch of apps not on a particular device but on top of the technological environment its participants support. These can be bots, smart contracts, applications that coordinate the actions of participants and record their interaction, etc.

However, the weakness of the system is user trust in the technological environment. Besides, there is a risk of disapproval of the government. To recap, in April 2018, the Federal Supervision Agency for Information Technologies and Communications blocked Telegram. Its management did not provide the FSB with encryption keys, which led to the ban.
