Messaging App LINE Moves to Boost Web3 Adoption in Asia, Launches Mini Dapps

LINE says all the applications will be powered by Kaia, an L1 blockchain that LINE NEXT recently joined hands with South Korea’s top messaging platform Kakao to develop.

LINE, one of Asia’s biggest messaging apps, may have taken it upon itself to champion the adoption of Web3 in the region. This was revealed after it launched its first batch of decentralized applications (Dapps) moments ago, through its Web3-focused arm LINE NEXT. According to the firm, which aims to drive Web3 adoption in Asia, and even globally, users around the world can access these Dapps via the LINE mobile messenger.

However, the reason for integrating the “Mini Dapps” into the LINE mobile messenger appears plain enough. That is because this move ensures that the applications are immediately accessible to the platform’s global user base of around 200 million.

LINE Aims to Use Mini Dapps to Make Blockchain Technology Easily Accessible

According to a press release, the newly launched Dapps will focus on gaming, social media services, and other Web3-based content. This means that they will appeal to a wide range of audience, bringing everyday users closer to blockchain.

LINE also noted in the release that all the applications will be powered by Kaia, an L1 blockchain that LINE NEXT recently joined hands with South Korea’s top messaging platform Kakao to develop.

For now, LINE NEXT has introduced 32 Mini Dapps in its first batch of releases. Bombie and Cattea, which is developed by Pluto Studio, is one of the Dapps. Superz is another Dapp, which will serve as a healthcare and wellness gateway for non-crypto users. Then, there is Captain Tsubasa -RIVALS- a game based on the popular soccer manga Captain Tsubasa, among others.

Before the year ends, though, LINE is confident that it must have introduced more than 1,000 projects.

Meanwhile, alongside the Mini Dapps, LINE also launched the Dapp Portal today. The firm confirms that the dedicated platform is designed to enable users to explore the Dapps seamlessly and trade virtual assets and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

A Lesson from Telegram

The success story of Telegram appears to be the inspiration behind LINE’s latest move. In 2024, Telegram launched various Dapps on its platform and quickly saw the results. That is, as its user base shot up from about 4 million to 128 million within a year.

From all indications, LINE might be planning to replicate this, and it’s not exactly impossible. That is, considering its strong presence in countries like Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand.

The optimism level for this ambition is also very high. According to LINE NEXT CEO Youngsu Ko, “mini Dapps based on LINE Messenger will become the first large-scale Web3 user adoption case in Asia”.
