Popular billionaire and Twitter owner Elon Musk calls for further regulatory oversight on the extremely fast-rising artificial intelligence (AI) technology. He talked about deep intelligence, noting that it should be a major concern for the government. Elon Musk made his speech in a video keynote address at an artificial intelligence conference backed by the Chinese government on the 5th of July.

Elin Musk Calls for Artificial Intelligence Regulatory Oversight

According to Musk, the world should tread carefully concerning deep intelligence. Regarding robots and autonomous driving, get said they may “exceed one to one ratio, in more robots than humans, and potentially much greater”. Speaking further, the Tesla CEO added that the high adoption of robots and expansion of self-driving vehicles is a significant change that requires proper oversight. He added that the governments must see that these developments benefit humanity.

In a statement, Musk emphasized that Tesla’s humanoid robot Optimus is a supplement to humans and not designed to replace them. He explained that the robot is meant to have just the appropriate intelligence needed to perform some tasks humans may prefer not to do that may be dangerous, repetitive, or boring.

It also includes human cognitive abilities to a program, which makes machines acquire knowledge like humans. As Elon Musk urges regulators to work on preventing the misuse of artificial intelligence, he stated:

“I do think we should be very careful with development of, especially, artificial general intelligence, or very deep intelligence. Artificial general intelligence is a computer intelligence that is smarter than all humans at everything … that is something we should be concerned about.”

In addition, he referred to level 4 or 5 of Tesla’s full driving that would be coming later in the year. In this case, humans can totally take their hands off the steering wheel while the car drives itself.

Furthermore, Elon Musk expressed his confidence in China’s ability to build artificial intelligence technologies. He believes that the country is able to do anything it sets out to achieve. The Tesla CEO maintained a good relationship with the Chinese government despite the most recent developments between the US government and China. Notably, the US is reportedly considering placing further restrictions on the country’s access to semiconductors and cloud computing services. The impact of the restriction means that China will have major challenges with developing AI. Meanwhile, the country said it is about to take the lead in the global AI race.
